Sorry Soulja, there will always be someone that does this thing we call rap better than you do. Check out this NYC rap group's rendition of Turn My Swag On. Telephoned - Turn My Swag On (drop)
I coulda swore I posted this, but apparently I didn't. Hopefully, I don't even need to remind you of who Blänk is, the Swedish group that put out that jam "Shirt Off," and then after that, "The Pills." Well a little while ago, I got another email from David Lindgren from their record company, Grind Records. He hooked me up with Blänk's latest release. It's pretty hot, I dig it. Young Ivy, the Atlanta rapper, is back on the track, and so is a new face, and beautiful voice of Lina. Keep em coming David, and keep the jams coming.
I'm gonna do some snooping around for some info on Young Ivy, cause everything he's teamed up with this group for is straight fire, especially in "Shirt Off."
Summer is really throwing off my blogging "schedule," and I leave mid June for the entire summer, so there won't be any music posted for the whole summer (unless someone wants to take over, let me know).
Well, the biggest surprise the music world has brought comes from an old familiar face. ...welcome back to the game DMX. Fresh outta prison, X already has two albums set to drop later this year. Shouts to illroots for this track. I dig it. DMX - The Way It's Gonna Be (drop)
Now, on with some other assorted music, news, etc.
News: -Jay Z has bought out his own contract with Def Jam. Significance? He's no longer on any label but his own, and now has control of every single aspect of his music. Complete freedom. Synopsis: Jay-Z is the fucking boss.
-Eminem shoots to number 1 in album sales, with number that look to be on their way to 650,000. The music industry is eating every bit of this up, Eminem's influence over the music world has not faltered in the least bit.
-Recently went to the Brother Ali and Atmosphere concert. Awesome show. Atmosphere sounds just as good as he does on his albums. Rocking some adidas shorts, a Jim's steaksandwiches tee and a windbreaker, Slug (Atmosphere's MC/rapper) just looks like any ordinary guy, which is what he seems to want. He gets the crowd actively involved, uses some improv and cracks jokes wih the audience. Slug comes out to shake each fan's hand before the show starts, the respect and grattitude towards his fans is obvious. Brother Ali was an unknown to me, but his music is very similar to Atmosphere, and his talent is equal. Check him out later in this post.
Where has Eminem been you ask?
...onto some more music...
Charles Hamilton Feat. Crooked I - Tears of Fire -Hamilton's sampling skills are unreal and seem to be unmatched in the upcoming artist. I'm starting to think he should be producing beats and handing them off, or sharing them at least.
Brother Ali - Take Me Home -Feel good summer song, resembling Atmosphere. No surprise that they're on the same independent label and from the same hometown of Minneapolis.
You may notice that Brother Ali is albino. All the more respect for making something out of himself. Brother Ali - Good Lord
Man, I owe you guys big time. I've been slacking since I've been home. So let's play catch up!
Personal News:
-I went to the Girl Talk and Lupe Fiasco concert at Drexel University last Saturday. Here are a few pictures.
Yup, that's Greg Gillis. And yup, that's us.
Yup, that's Greg Gillis. And yup, that's me dancing on stage with him and 7500 girls.
Yup, that's Lupe.
This concert was unreal. Girl Talk did his thing, mashing popular samples over an eclectic mix of instrumentals. Honestly, the whole thing was a blur, my lifelong dream of dancing on stage with Girl Talk was fulfilled and it comes as no surprise that I found every mix to be flawless and unbelievable, even though I'm sure they were not. I'm too biased on this one to give an accurate description or analysis. I have never been so sweaty in my entire life, and sure enough, when the Jackson 5 instrumental hit, I joined Girl Talk as another shirtless maniac on stage.
Lupe was surprising to me. I saw him when he came to IU, and he rocked shit then, just as he rocked shit at Drexel. What surprised me was his opening song(s). He began with "The Instrumental" and continued on through a few other not-that-known music, not the way I thought he would go to capture an audience. Yeah they're awesome tracks, but how many Lupe fans there actually know all of his music? I'd hope to say all of them, but I'm more realistic than that. Lupe's stage presence and energy is unmatched by any performing artist I've seen in my life, and the audience becomes sucks in from the start; the atmosphere is ecstatic. He's a great performer, lyricist, and rapper. He previewed a new track from his upcoming (and last) album, LupE.N.D., that featured Matthew Santos (or so it seems), and it sounded ridiculous. I have high expectations.
-I'm going to see Atmosphere this Friday, so I'll let you know how that goes. Chiddy Bang at some point this summer too!
-I'm about 6 tracks into A More Perfect Union, but won't be able to work on it this summer. Hang in there.
Moving on from personal experience to some news in the music world:
-The bodyguard, named Alfamega, that ratted T.I. out was kicked out of Grand Hustle (T.I.'s label) and was arrested after running from the cops after taking pepper spray to the face. I consider that good news. Fuck you Alfamega.
-Eminem's whole album has leaked. Fuck that. Don't expect any more from his album on this blog. He'll appear on Family Guy this Sunday though!
-Still, nobody cares about the beef between 50 cent and Rick Ross.
I know, a random mix of rap, not rap, remixes, originals, new, old, etc. It's just what I've been listening to lately and I owe you guys some good music that you may not know yet. I may feature Lenlow or one of these others another time, but enjoy these for now.
P.S. I got an email from David Lingren, from Blänk's record label (Grind Records), with a new track and video, so I'll probably post that up and comment on that tomorrow. I still rock to their jam "Shirt Off" all the time.
New track from Relapse, called Insane. It's...insane. Some really fucked up shit in here. For those of you concerned over that accent Eminem has had on his latest releases, this should ease your fears at least.
I also feel like people don't know what's been up with Eminem before this. He's been in and out of rehab for several years, addicted to medication he was taking. He claims he couldn't even remember the last time he recorded a track completely sober of drugs and alcohol, and that this album was like starting over for him. So this album, aptly named "Relapse," is more than just a comeback to music for Marshall Mathers, it's a comback to a real life really. Hopefully this will be the first of a few more albums as Eminem gets his life back on track. Eminem - Insane (drop)
Aries Spears impersonating a few of our favorite rappers.
Nick Pitera impersonating of a few of our favorite Disney characters. This guy is unreal, it's creepy how dead on he is; check his other songs too in related videos, they are no exception.
I posted the Benzi & Plain Pat "Sky High" mixtape a while ago, but I just gotta highlight this Cudi track from it. It's just dirty. So if you didn't download the mixtape, check this ish out now. Cudi threw it on his mixtape, Dat Kid From Cleveland, as well. So check out Cudi's mixtape and specifically, this jam from the remixed Kanye album.
The Hood Internet might be the best mash up creators I know of. Every mashup I've featured of theirs (check out the other features by going to the somewhat newly added 'tags' in the right column) is so clean and perfect. They're on top of their shit, remixing new music all the time. Here's a couple of the hip hop class of '09 mashed up, directly from their website (linked above).
White Folks Get Crunk has been delivering mad crazy mashups lately. I feel like I've more or less been forwarding their featured mashups. Dig this Lil' Wayne and Chromeo mash up.
P.S. Nyle's "Let the Beat Build" video, the one I featured here 2 weeks ago, is now youtube's spotlight featured video. Kid's getting his rec finally. You heard it here first.
